H2GO

National action plan for fuel-cell production

The national action plan for fuel-cell production — manufacturing research and industrialisation to ramp up fuel-cell trucks for heavy-duty, long-haul transport.

H2GOBMDV

H2GO is the national action plan for fuel-cell production. It supports the build-up of a German fuel-cell industry through manufacturing research, development and industrial implementation. The aim is to ramp up fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV) in heavy-duty and long-haul transport, and to strengthen technological sovereignty and export capability for Germany as an industrial location.

The focus is on the manufacturing technology for the central components of the fuel-cell stack — from the bipolar plate (BPP) and the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) to the end plates and current collectors, and on to the stack and its housing. Scalable production solutions are developed and validated for these products.

The individual solutions are brought together in a virtual reference architecture. This makes it possible to model, compare and evaluate processes and entire process chains with a view to economical high-volume production.

As a national action plan, H2GO consolidates the production expertise for the fuel cell and strengthens the competitiveness and export capability of German truck manufacturers and the machinery and plant engineering sector. The project is coordinated by Fraunhofer IWU within the Referenzfabrik.H₂ and funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport under the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP).

Objectives

  • Enable the market ramp-up of fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV) in heavy-duty and long-haul transport
  • Secure national technological sovereignty in fuel-cell production
  • Strengthen the export capability of German truck manufacturers and the machinery and plant engineering sector
