Hollow embossing

Innovative forming of sheet and foil components

Hollow embossing (colloquially: embossing) opens up new possibilities for function-integrated components with minimal material input. In our test fields we develop robust forming processes for demanding geometries together with you. Ideal for industrial prototype production and the validation of new product designs.

Hollow embossing
How it works: the punch draws the foil semi-finished product into the die and forms the flow channels of the bipolar plate.

How hollow embossing works

The process is based on the interaction of punch and die. The foil-like semi-finished product is plastically deformed between the tool halves by combined tensile and bending stress. The punch enters the cavity of the die and draws the material in a defined way over the tool radii into the depth. The resulting depressions form the channels that guide the media in the bipolar plate.

Hollow-embossing systems

Various hollow-embossing systems are available in the test fields at Fraunhofer IWU. Get in touch to have your prototypes tested with us.
