H2Wind

PEM electrolyser coupled directly to offshore wind turbines

A novel PEM electrolyser coupled directly to offshore wind turbines, producing hydrogen largely autonomously under harsh maritime conditions.

H2WindBMFTR

As part of the H2Wind project (part of H2Mare), a novel PEM electrolyser is being developed that is coupled directly to offshore wind turbines. The goal is a compact, efficient system that operates largely autonomously even under the extreme conditions of the open sea.

To achieve this, the focus is on adapting the components to the maritime environment and on an optimised plant design that eases assembly and maintenance far from the coast. In addition, H2Wind develops concepts for seawater treatment, for hydrogen storage and for the economic assessment of plant operation.

As part of the H2Mare flagship hydrogen project, H2Wind targets the offshore production of green hydrogen directly at sea. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space.

Objectives

  • Adapt the PEM electrolyser components to the maritime environment
  • Optimise the plant design for assembly and maintenance far from the coast
  • Develop concepts for seawater treatment and hydrogen storage
  • Assess the economic viability of plant operation
